What are the soil requirements for my new tree?

Trees need soil that's loose, moist, well-aerated, and non-compacted to thrive. These conditions allow tree roots to access nutrients, oxygen, and water, which are essential for healthy growth. Non-compacted soil also has more voids between particles, which helps trees access oxygen and water.

When can you dig a tree for me to purchase?

The best time to dig a tree, or transplant it, is when it's dormant and less likely to be damaged.

For Deciduous trees: This is usually in late fall after the leaves have fallen but before the ground freezes, or in early spring before new buds form. If you transplant a tree in the spring, its growth may be stunted for that season.

For Evergreens: This is early spring before the buds break, or in late summer/fall from August to mid-September.

For Arborvitae: This is usually from mid-May to late September. They aren't as picky, as long as they get lots of water!

How should I water my freshly transplanted tree?

Newly transplanted trees need proper watering to provide moisture and oxygen to their roots, and to help them adjust to their new environment. Here are some tips for watering newly planted trees:

Frequency

Water newly planted trees at least every two to three days, or daily for the first season. In hot or windy weather, water more frequently.

Amount

Water 1–1.5 gallons per inch of the tree's stem caliper at each watering. For example, a 15-gallon tree might need to soak for 20–30 minutes. Larger trees might need 8–10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter per week.

Location

Apply water directly over the root ball, and keep the backfill soil moist to encourage the roots to spread. Position the hose slowly next to the trunk so the water seeps into the root ball. Arborvitaes also like to be showered, gently spray water over all of the foliage.

Weather

Adjust your watering strategy based on the weather. For example, you can supplement with 10–15 gallons of water during dry periods and when temperatures are above 40°F, but avoid watering when temperatures are near or below freezing. You can also check the soil's moisture by sticking your finger in about four to six inches deep.
